Freshen Up Your Carpets After Holiday Parties

As fun as hosting parties throughout the holiday season can be, they can also leave aftermath for the host that is anything but.  Here are some quick tips from Better Homes & Gardens to get unavoidable carpet stains out, bringing your carpets back to good as new.
Red wine stains are one of the most common and scariest.  If a guest spills red wine on your carpet - pour white wine over it quickly to neutralize it. Then liberally sprinkle the area with table salt and cover with a damp white towel. That gives you time to let it sit without setting.  After your guests leave, press the stain with dry white cloths until they come up clean. Repeat as needed. You may need to finish off with a carpet cleaner for the more stubborn stains.

White Wine stains are less easy to spot, but you just need to flush them with cold water or club soda and blot dry with a clean towel.

For tomato-based condiments, such as pasta sauce, ketchup, or barbecue sauce stains just dab the affected area with dish washing liquid, then rinse with distilled white vinegar.

Coffee and tea stains can easily be resolved with white vinegar and a cool water rinse.

For dirt or mud tracks first vacuum up any dry dirt around the area then use alternating treatments of detergent and vinegar mixtures, blotting with lukewarm water and dry white towels in between.

Here is a party spills cleaning kit you can assemble and keep on hand to make the clean up process painless. Likely you will already have most of them around the house, so just gather them together for easy access:
  • Artificial sweetener
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Club soda
  • Wine Away (available at most liquor and wine stores)
  • Dish-washing liquid
  • Mineral spirits
  • Rubbing alcohol
Hopefully these hints will help you get your carpets back into top shape following an active party season!

Going Hardwood?

Are you thinking of transitioning to hardwood floors in your home?  If so chances are you have some questions.  Here are a few of the top things to consider according to the National Wood Flooring Association.
Cognac Hickory

Solid or engineered hardwood - both are natural wood, just composed different. Solid is just that - a solid piece of wood of varying thicknesses.  This type can be used in any room on an upper level of a home. Engineered hardwood is layers of wood veneers layered together and can be nailed or glued to a sub-floor or concrete slab, making it perfect for basements.

Which species you choose will help set the tone of your home.  Light woods like ash or maple tend to make a room feel more open and airy.    Medium woods such as hickory and oak can make a room feel more warm and cozy, while dark woods like maple or mahogany add a more stately feel.

Oak Butterscotch
Ordering 10% more flooring than necessary for the square footage is normal in order to have enough product to work around fireplaces, stairs or closets

Choosing a sheen is really a personal preference. Typically the less sheen you have the less little scratches will show.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when considering hard wood floors as an option for flooring in your home.  If you have questions or would like to see samples just stop by Barefoot Floors in Osage Beach and we would be happy to give you ideas and answer any questions you may have!

Our Goal is No Kiddos with Cold Toes

Unfortunately too many people all around are in need of the bare necessities for survival, and the Lake Area is no different.  Hundreds of good families rely on organizations to assist them with day to day needs such as food, toiletries and clothing just to survive. The reasons why these situations exist vary and are really not important.  The important thing is if you have the means to help then you should do what you can.

For over five years Blinds and More, Inc. has been a drop off location in Osage Beach for Share the Harvest Food Pantry of Greenview and has collected hundreds of items for their patrons.

Going into this holiday season Owner, Joni Walden, decided to be a bit more specific this year.  After learning there are 500 children listed who need socks she decided to try and remedy that need.  A Kids Sock Drive is currently underway at Blinds and More, Inc. along with sister store Barefoot Floors.  The goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of socks so each child gets 2 pair.  Any child sizes in any color are being gathered.  So as you are out doing your own holiday shopping, grab a couple pair of kids’ socks and drop them off.  Or if it is easier you can drop off a donation to one of the stores and they will purchase the socks.  Every little bit helps and is appreciated.

Blinds and More, Inc is located at 5509 Osage Beach Pkwy and Barefoot Floors is at 5513 Osage Beach Pkwy, both next to the Osage Beach Post Office.  Items can be dropped off between 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday and 9am – noon on Saturday.

Share the Harvest's Food Pantry's mission is to help feed the hungry. The Food Pantry provides once per month food in a friendly store environment where qualified families can shop for free food that meets their needs and desires. Share the Harvest also operates a Thrift Store that resells donated, quality household items.  The Food Pantry is currently serving approximately 1,000 families, 3,500 people each month. This equals distribution of 100,000 lbs. of food each month.  Share the Harvest Food Pantry & Thrift Store is located at 689 North State Highway 7 (N. Hwy. 7 & EE Junction- Greenview).

Shop Local...Make Your Community Thrive!

The backbone of most small communities in the Midwest are the small businesses.  Shopping local provides a multiplier effect that is three fold according to the American Independent Business Alliance:
www.amiba.net

  1. Direct impact is spending done by a business in the local economy to operate the business, including inventory, utilities, equipment and pay to employees.
  2. Indirect impact happens as dollars the local business spent at other area businesses re-circulate.
  3. Induced impact refers to the additional consumer spending that happens as employees, business owners and others spend their income in the local economy.
Small Business Saturday
So every dollar you spend with a locally owned business make the entire community thrive and grow.  This is no different in the Lake Area which is full of entrepreneurs and small business owners.  Here are just a few reasons why when given the choice - local is the way to go!
  • Keep dollars circulating in the local community keep more small businesses operating which offers more choices to the consumer.
  • Competition keeps everyone honest and is a great way to maintain lower prices for the long term.
  • Money spent with a local business will generate 3.5x's more wealth for the local economy compared to money spent at a chain-owned business according to Michael Salguero, CEO and Co-founder, CustomMade.com.
  • By choosing local independent makers / growers you cut down on packaging as well as transportation waste.
As we draw near the holiday shopping season keep in mind the small business owners in your area and buy local whenever you can!

Lavish, warm floors are popular in kitchens, entries, bathrooms, shower floors or any room with cold floors. An example of one product is the SunTouch TapeMats which are used in long flat areas, attaching to the subfloor then covered with mortar and a finished floor.

Another option is the SunTouch WarmWire which is perfect for large rooms or ones with complex layouts. The cable straps are secured to the subfloor then stretched between beams before covering, and it's waterproof!
