Freshen Up Your Carpets After Holiday Parties

As fun as hosting parties throughout the holiday season can be, they can also leave aftermath for the host that is anything but.  Here are some quick tips from Better Homes & Gardens to get unavoidable carpet stains out, bringing your carpets back to good as new.
Red wine stains are one of the most common and scariest.  If a guest spills red wine on your carpet - pour white wine over it quickly to neutralize it. Then liberally sprinkle the area with table salt and cover with a damp white towel. That gives you time to let it sit without setting.  After your guests leave, press the stain with dry white cloths until they come up clean. Repeat as needed. You may need to finish off with a carpet cleaner for the more stubborn stains.

White Wine stains are less easy to spot, but you just need to flush them with cold water or club soda and blot dry with a clean towel.

For tomato-based condiments, such as pasta sauce, ketchup, or barbecue sauce stains just dab the affected area with dish washing liquid, then rinse with distilled white vinegar.

Coffee and tea stains can easily be resolved with white vinegar and a cool water rinse.

For dirt or mud tracks first vacuum up any dry dirt around the area then use alternating treatments of detergent and vinegar mixtures, blotting with lukewarm water and dry white towels in between.

Here is a party spills cleaning kit you can assemble and keep on hand to make the clean up process painless. Likely you will already have most of them around the house, so just gather them together for easy access:
  • Artificial sweetener
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Club soda
  • Wine Away (available at most liquor and wine stores)
  • Dish-washing liquid
  • Mineral spirits
  • Rubbing alcohol
Hopefully these hints will help you get your carpets back into top shape following an active party season!
